REPORT : "Incompetent Teachers"
The topic I have decided to talk about is “INCOMPETENT TEACHERS”
One of the major issues today in education is the accountability of teachers.
Students across the nation are required to take exams in classes as a requirement for receiving course credit or a diploma. However can a student be held accountable for something never taught to them?
What if the instructor does not know the content and therefore cannot teach it?
What if the classroom management style is of such an extreme that the students cannot learn in it?
Is it okay for a teacher to simply lecture and/or assign work strictly from the book while never taking the time to communicate it effectively to the students or periodically checking for comprehension before the big test?
Do repeated high failure rates send a red flag up to an administrator that the teacher’s form of assessment is not viable?
If students do not master the concepts are they left behind never to catch up? Are parental complaints taken into consideration? Is it ever okay for a teacher to say, “Your so stupid and lazy; you’ll never pass my class.
” What if the teacher is incompetent?
Well, schools – whether state or independent, primary or tertiary– have never been good at dealing with incompetent teachers.
- The procedures are tortuous and time-consuming
- The personal nature of the process often divides staff rooms and damages morale.
It is easier for head teachers to encourage the troublemaker to resign with a reference that allows him or her to transfer the problem to another unsuspecting school.
While the number of incompetent teachers is supposed to be falling, there is still at least that one teacher you dread to see on the class list.
Excluding my high school days, I know that I have had three teachers at TAFE that have exhibited absolutely atrocious and disrespectful behaviour towards us students and have actually impeded my learning and development, and don’t worry Peter, that doesn’t include you ha ha ha.
Some may say that that figure is reasonable. Well I say that in the extremely competitive world that we live in it just is not good enough. As in any walk of life there are varying degrees of incompetence. Many teachers would be known as poor performers but have done nothing to warrant a sacking.
Well I ask the question, if you go to a doctor and they diagnose you by pulling a condition out of a hat, and it is quite possibly wrong, but it is still a diagnosis, just like useless teacher. They stand up and talk, but is it really teaching us anything. Have they fulfilled what is expected of them? I say no, and that alone is grounds for investigation.
In fact, it is negligence of duty. When an accountant gets a job they must uphold fair and true representations of finances. If they don’t, they loose their licence to practice. How is that any different to a teacher?
There responsibility is to enrich another’s life and provide them with a wealth of knowledge. If they fail to do so, is that not negligible behaviour.
They said they would teach you, and if they don’t, is that not a breach of agreement.
If you go to the hospital to get your tonsils out and they give you a hysterectomy instead, is that any different to the teacher. Both have not provided what they claim to be capable of doing. It is blatant misrepresentation.
Before the abolition of the probationary year at the end of a teacher’s training, some would have been weeded out. Others are timeservers who will be as hard to remove.
Its all to easy to stand here and criticize these pathetic excuses for educational guardians, but a solution is not so easy with this government in power.
In my opinion, and the opinion of famed scholars on the matter such as Mr Bartley, the most inept teachers should have been given the chance to improve and, after due warning, ought to be sacked. In a minority of cases a clean slate at a new school, after the right training, will be enough to rescue a career and prevent further damage to pupils’ education. But it is no substitute for head teachers addressing incompetence straight away.
And that’s a very important issue. Of course people that work at the same place are sure to become friends, but at what point is the professional divide. At what point should the head teacher say “enough is enough”, and actually do the job THEY are meant to be doing and take action against the offending member of staff. Just like it is not the job of a mother to be the daughter’s best friend, it is not the job of the head teacher to turn a blind eye. Just don’t let personal issues take over your get professionalism.
While the internal politics of sacking an incompetent teacher can divide the staff room, but is there not a famous saying that “the customer is always right”, and when it comes down to it, the teachers are providing the service to the students in exchange for tender which constitutes a sale of service. When you buy a car that is meant to be brand new but it is missing half the engine, would you be content to sit there and accept it. Unless you’re completely ignorant then I would say no, you wouldn’t be.
CONCLUSION
Further more to conclude this discussion I finally say the reason I had decided on this topic is because I feel that this is an issue that not many people decide to bring up incase they get criticized and ridiculed. It is also one that annoys me for this very reason. I believe this to be an issue that everyone can relate to.
Imagine how you would feel if you were told by a teacher that you were stupid and a waste of their time. Pretty low and upset I reckon. What if the teacher was always biast, negative or disrespectful towards you? Would you feel uncomfortable, frustrated, hurt? The answer I believe is YES.
I mean even if teachers don’t say these things, they may still make you feel like this by their actions. They say that “Actions speak louder then words” after all. I believe this to be very true.
